WEST BOYLSTON — The West Boylston Select Board approved submitting a statement of interest for a new elementary school and appointed Michael Ward as town administrator. Superintendent Riley said the pre-K through six replacement for Major Edwards Elementary School could cost around $70 million, with roughly half reimbursed by the state. Town Administrator Carter warned that combined with a new fire station, DPW building and sewer work, total capital needs are "closer to 150" million dollars, prompting a unanimous vote to pause other warrant articles until the Townwide Planning Committee reports back by September 2, 2026.
The board also voted 4-0 on a roll call to appoint Ward, who beat out finalists Sean Fitzgerald and Michael Slozik, with board member Barur R. Rajeshkumar voting yes "reluctantly" over turnover concerns. The board separately flagged a roughly $300,000 structural budget deficit for fiscal 2027.
